Literature will also have a place in this blog, it does not matter if it is a manga, light novel or a regular novel, reviews will also be available for them. In the case of manga or light novels it will be an ongoing review as the volumes are available in English. Other restrictions may apply but now it’s time to inaugurate this section with a colorful manga that got an anime adaptation last year: Please Tell Me! Galko-chan.
Please Tell Me! Galko-chan (おしえて！ギャル子ちゃん) is a manga with a simple premise: A comedy slice-of-life with high school students and their raunchy curiosity that will lead to the humorous situations on the panels. Our protagonist is Galko-chan, a shy and innocent girl who despite her looks is rather inexperienced on topics like sex and get embarrassed easily. She is not alone, her two friends: Otako, an Otaku girl with glasses who likes to tease Galko with rather suggestive topics and Ojou, a friendly rich lady who is a little bit air-headed and always wants to know more of the normal world. Each page is presented with such questions like: “Is it true that the shape and color of someone’s lips reflects their genitals?” or “Is it true that your anus is about as sensitive as your tongue?” and this is the trigger for the interactions between our characters.
The comedy on Please Tell Me! Galko-chan is on point. We learn with the girls the fascinating world that is our sexuality and even got to ponder on questions that we overlooked as we grew up. Some could see this as an attempt for filthy humor but that’s never the case, even if the questions are lewd and explicit, the girls and boys treat this topic really quite innocent. Not everything about Please Tell Me! Galko-chan is sex or pubic hair or nipple size, the characters do your usual slice of life things like shopping, visiting the pool, movies, etc. The main trio of girls are not the only characters and while the others don’t get featured as much, we get a glimpse to their life and their curiosity, their lustful curiosity.
Overall this first volume is great, the artwork is cute, colorful and adequate to the style of the story. I did watch the show before reading the manga and I think I enjoyed more the manga. Probably it has to do with the adaption being a short anime and I wished it could cover more of the jokes presented here. If you are into raunchy comedy or you want to pick a spicier slice of life, this is the manga for you. The English version is available both as a fantranslation and also licensed by Seven Seas so the decision is yours.
Look forward for more reviews!
