First Impressions: Fall Season

First Impression

The air is filled with the aroma of pumpkin and Christmas decorations, which means the Fall season is here. As part of this ongoing series, I’m going to list the shows I picked up, those that are walking on a tight rope and the ones that are not even worthy to look past the third episode. Previously stated, I will include Anime that originally aired during the last season but will continue in this one. The list will also be updated accordingly if there are future droppings or saving one from the “soon to be dropped” limbo. As an initial thought about the Fall season is that is shaping to be better than the Summer one.

Shows I like

Blend S

WWW.Working was a letdown and could not fit the shoes WORKING! left, but in Blend S we have a spiritual successor of the daily occurrences of food service workers. The animation is top notch and the characters are just lovable.

Net-juu no Susume

I was tricked into watching Otomes and I don’t regret it. A romantic story that does not involve denser than a black hole MC and relatable mature characters make for a great experience and funny moments. Although I don’t like the overall praise for practices like DLC and loot boxes but it’s a minor nitpick.

Kino no Tabi (2017)

Before you come up with your torch and scanlines, take the nostalgia googles off and give a chance to this remake of the Kino no Tabi novels. The first adaptation is a classic which cannot be topped. This remake attempts to be its own thing and so far it’s working.

Shoujo Shoumatsu Ryokou

Who could have thought that the comfiest story of the season was going to be the one about a post-apocalyptic world devoid of life? Two girls exploring the legacy of a civilization that tried its best but somehow only weapons and statues are left.

Just Because!

Although I have been complaining about high school settings, the direction of this romantic drama puts it above other season selections. Slow pacing, focus on the characters and their feelings, and no bullshit drama makes Just Because! worth of watching more of it. I only hope the production problems do not affect the development of the relationships.

Mahoujin Guru Guru (2017)

You are missing out if you are not watching this show. I could be talking hours and hours about Mahoujin Guru Guru and how it gets close to be the perfect Anime. Just watch it.

Osomatsu-san S2

The brothers are back and the comedy has not declined. I was worried that the incredible spotlight the show got, the director and writers would fall in love with the tropes and that the second season would be a circlejerk of references instead of doing what worked during the first season. Thankfully it didn’t happen.

Imouto sae Ireba li

Don’t be fooled by the first episode of this show, it is almost a filter for those who don’t pay attention and judge a book by its cover. Written by the same guy behind Haganai, I hope he got his shit together and learned how to write a satisfying ending.

Animegataris is an Isekai where a girl is dropped into a world where gatekeeping does not exist and people who are into Anime welcome new people and support them, they even let others have different opinions. Surely the craziest world you can imagine. This show is also meta as fuck.

Juuni Taisen

Nisio Isin, stick to (milking) writing Monogatari.

Mahoutsukai no Yome

There’s something unsettling about Mahoutsukai no Yome, it is beautiful and has great animation, but the premise makes me uncomfortable. It also suffers from being tone deaf and not knowing what feeling is trying to elicit from the audience. Should I laugh when the magician said he bought her to make her bride? Should I be concerned?

Black Cover

Dude, Harajuku, LMAO

Ousama Game

It is impossible to be polite about Ousama Game. A giant piece of shit that is thrown in your face. Stupid, bland and insipid characters, with a moronic plot that has been done countless times and with a much better effect. Not even so bad it’s funny tier. The show is rated R for Retarded. Spoil yourself and laugh to the most idiotic plot device you can imagine for a premise like this.

Soon to be dropped

Boku no Kanojo ga Majimesugiru Sho

I wanted to drop this show but it reminds me a lot of Seitokai Yakuindomo and I need my fix of dirty jokes.

The Idolm@ster Cinderella Theater

Not saying I’m going to drop it willingly, but being a 5-min short, it might get the amnesia treatment and be forgotten after a couple of episodes.

Inuyashiki (As 2017/11/23)

Don’t tell anyone but I liked Gantz and I was excited for this show. It should be more often that old men are the main characters of Anime. You don’t have to deal with awkwardness and petty problems, and you gained an experienced but troubled person in a situation they did not wish for. CGI can be distracting though. Update: I forgot I was watching this show.
